ADHD, Gut Health & The Nervous System
What Most Women Are Never Told
(Women’s Health Clinic Dublin | ADHD, Gut & Hormonal Health)
Hello women,
Let’s talk about something that’s not talked about enough.
ADHD in women.
Because if you’ve ever felt like:
Your brain has 47 tabs open
You can’t focus… but also can’t switch off
You’re overwhelmed by simple things
You crash HARD after being “on”
Your emotions feel… a lot
You’ve probably been told:
👉 “It’s ADHD”
👉 “It’s neurological”
👉 “It’s just how your brain works”
And yes — that’s part of it.
But it’s not the full story.
Your brain is not working alone
Here’s the bit most women are never told:
👉 Your brain is deeply connected to your gut and nervous system
So when those are off…
👉 your focus, mood, and energy are affected too
Let’s talk dopamine (because this is key)
Dopamine is your:
✨ motivation
✨ focus
✨ reward
✨ “get up and do the thing” chemical
In ADHD, dopamine regulation is different.
Which is why you might feel:
Unmotivated… until you’re suddenly hyper-focused
Bored easily
Constantly seeking stimulation (hello scrolling 😅)
BUT here’s the interesting part:
👉 Your gut helps produce dopamine precursors
So if your gut is off?
👉 dopamine signalling can be off too
And serotonin (the calm one we all want)
Serotonin helps with:
✨ mood
✨ calm
✨ emotional stability
✨ sleep
And about 90% of it is made in your gut
Yes. Your gut.
So if your gut is inflamed, sluggish or imbalanced:
👉 your mood regulation takes a hit
Which can feel like:
Anxiety
Emotional swings
Feeling overwhelmed
Low mood alongside ADHD
The gut–brain axis (aka the missing piece)
Your gut and brain are constantly talking.
Through something called:
👉 the gut–brain axis
It’s a two-way communication system.
So:
Gut imbalance → brain symptoms
Stress → gut symptoms
Which is why ADHD often doesn’t just feel like “focus issues”
It feels like:
👉 your whole system is off
Here is a blog I wrote about the Gut if you wanted to read deeper into that topic.
Why many women with ADHD feel worse over time
Because no one is looking at the full picture.
We often see:
Gut imbalance
Inflammation
Nervous system dysregulation
Hormonal fluctuations
And this gets more noticeable:
👉 before your period
👉 during stress
👉 in perimenopause
Suddenly you’re like:
“Why is my ADHD 10x worse this week??”
👉 It’s not random.
The nervous system piece (this is HUGE)
If your body is constantly in:
🚨 fight or flight
You might feel:
Wired but exhausted
Unable to relax
Easily overwhelmed
Snappy or emotional
And your brain?
👉 Struggles to focus in that state
Because it’s trying to survive, not concentrate.
The vagus nerve (your regulation switch)
The vagus nerve connects:
👉 your gut
👉 your brain
👉 your nervous system
It influences:
Focus
Emotional regulation
Digestion
Stress response
If it’s not functioning well:
👉 everything feels harder
Where your gut comes into this (practically)
If your digestion is:
Sluggish
Bloated
Irregular
This can affect:
👉 neurotransmitter production
👉 inflammation
👉 energy levels
Which feeds straight back into:
👉 ADHD symptoms
What you can start doing NOW (realistic, doable)
No extremes. Just support.
🧠 1. Stabilise your energy
Eat regularly. Include protein.
👉 blood sugar swings = brain chaos
🚶♀️ 2. Move your body daily
Even a walk.
👉 supports dopamine + regulation
🍽️ 3. Support your gut
Notice:
Bloating
Constipation
Food reactions
👉 these are clues, not inconveniences
☕ 4. Watch caffeine
If you’re:
Anxious
Wired
Crashing
👉 it might be adding fuel to the fire
🧘♀️ 5. Regulate your nervous system
Simple things:
Slowing down meals
Getting daylight
Breathing properly
👉 this is not “nice to have” — it’s foundational
Where colonic hydrotherapy can support
Within a structured plan, this can help:
Improve gut motility
Reduce stagnation
Support elimination
Lower inflammatory load
Which can lead to:
✨ clearer thinking
✨ less bloating
✨ better body awareness
A different way to look at ADHD
At Possié Integrative Medicine, we don’t just see ADHD as:
👉 neurological
We see it as:
👉 whole-body regulation
We assess:
Gut health
Hormones
Nervous system
Lifestyle patterns
Because your brain is not separate from your body.
If you’re reading this thinking “this is me”
You’re not lazy.
You’re not chaotic.
You’re not “too much.”
Your system just needs support.

Final thought
Your brain is not broken.
It’s responding to your internal environment.
And when you support the system —
👉 your mind starts to feel very different.
